How 16:8 fasting works, and where people get it wrong
16:8 works mostly because a shorter eating window means less food, not because something magical happens at hour sixteen. Insulin falls, the body moves toward using fat for fuel, and appetite hormones shift. Trials that match calories between fasting and non-fasting groups find little difference, which tells you the window is a tool for eating less, not a metabolic trick.
16:8 means fasting for sixteen hours and eating within eight. It is the most popular pattern in the world because it asks you to change when you eat rather than what — and that is a much smaller ask.
Why does fasting actually make people lose weight?
Because most people eat less when the window is shorter. Removing one meal, and removing the hours in which snacking happens, takes calories out of the day without anybody counting.
This is not a disappointing answer, it is a useful one. It tells you exactly when fasting will fail: when the eating window becomes the window in which you make up everything you skipped. The same trial that shows fasting working also shows it doing nothing at all for people who compensate.
What is the body doing during the fast?
The first four to five hours are digestion and absorption. Insulin is up, and the body is running on what just arrived.
From roughly hour five to twelve, insulin falls and the body works through liver glycogen. Somewhere in the second half of that stretch, glycogen runs low and fat becomes a larger share of the fuel.
Past twelve hours, fat oxidation is clearly dominant and ketone levels start to climb — slowly at first. Growth hormone rises. None of this is a switch; it is a gradual handover, and the exact hours differ between a sedentary person and someone who trained that evening.
Does autophagy start at 16 hours?
There is no good human evidence for that number. Autophagy is a continuous housekeeping process that runs all the time and increases under stress, including fasting — but almost everything quoted about the timing comes from mice, and mice have a metabolic rate several times ours. Their hours do not convert to ours.
Measuring autophagy in a living human is genuinely difficult, which is why the confident numbers you see are confident about something nobody has measured. Fast because eating less suits you, not because you are chasing a clock nobody has read.
Is fasting longer better?
Not linearly, and not for most goals. Beyond about 24 hours the share of lean tissue in what you lose rises, adherence drops sharply, and the practical benefit over 16:8 is small for someone whose aim is fat loss.
Longer fasts have their uses and their own literature, but "more is better" is not what that literature says.
What can you drink during the fast?
Water, unsweetened tea, and black coffee. None carries enough energy to change anything.
Milk, creamer, juice and anything sweetened end the fast. Diet drinks and sugar-free gum sit in a grey area: in energy terms they are irrelevant, but if part of your goal is to stop reaching for sweetness, that is a separate decision and only you can make it.
Reading something you can act on beats reading something you cannot.
