Read this first Everything here is reference information drawn from the research literature, not medical advice, and Lamduan is neither a doctor nor a pharmacist. Supplements are not medicines and do not replace anything a doctor has prescribed. If you take regular medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have liver or kidney disease, or have surgery coming up, speak to a pharmacist or doctor before starting anything on this page.

Fatty acids

Omega-3 (fish oil) EPA / DHA / fish oil
What it is

Fatty acids from oily fish; the two that matter are EPA and DHA. Read the EPA+DHA figure, not the total fish oil per capsule — they often differ threefold.

What it helps with Strong evidence

Lowering triglycerides by 15-30% at 2-4 g/day — very well established. Whether it prevents actual cardiac events is still contested; the large trials split between positive and neutral.

Effect on hormones Weak

Mild improvements in insulin sensitivity and inflammatory markers. No effect on testosterone.

Weight and fat loss No human data

Does not reduce body fat, even though it improves the blood lipid numbers.

Sleep Weak

Small studies in children suggest DHA helps sleep; in adults there is no good evidence.

Other health effects Strong evidence

Triglycerides, brain, retina and inflammation.

Dose and ceiling

Commonly used: 1,000-3,000 mg per day

No official limit. This app warns at 4,000 mg EPA+DHA, above which the atrial fibrillation signal becomes clearer.

When to take it Take with food.
Caution There is a consistent signal that doses from 1 g/day slightly raise the risk of atrial fibrillation. Keep it refrigerated and smell it before taking — rancid oil has no benefit and promotes the inflammation it is meant to reduce.
Interacts with medicines The bleeding warning with anticoagulants is heavily overstated — a meta-analysis of 11 trials and 120,643 people found no increase. Still tell your doctor, but there is no need for alarm.
