Read this first Everything here is reference information drawn from the research literature, not medical advice, and Lamduan is neither a doctor nor a pharmacist. Supplements are not medicines and do not replace anything a doctor has prescribed. If you take regular medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have liver or kidney disease, or have surgery coming up, speak to a pharmacist or doctor before starting anything on this page.

Minerals

Magnesium glycinate / citrate / oxide

Zinc picolinate / gluconate
What it is

A mineral essential to immunity, wound healing and sex hormone production.

What it helps with Moderate

Shortening a cold — though the 2024 Cochrane update rates the evidence low to very low certainty, far more cautious than the two-days figure people repeat. The clearest use is correcting deficiency.

Effect on hormones Moderate

Testosterone rises only in men who are genuinely zinc deficient. In men with normal levels it does not move — the most common misunderstanding among people taking it for that reason.

Weight and fat loss No human data

Does not reduce fat.

Sleep No human data

No good evidence for sleep.

Other health effects Strong evidence

Immunity, skin, taste and wound healing.

Dose and ceiling

Commonly used: 10-30 mg per day

40 mg/day — IOM; EFSA says 25 mg. Counts all sources, and is set on zinc blocking copper absorption.

Caution This is the clearest supplement-on-supplement conflict there is. Taking 50 mg/day or more for weeks blocks copper absorption, causing copper deficiency: anaemia, low white cells, and spinal cord damage with unsteady walking that may not fully recover. If you must take high zinc long term, add 1-2 mg copper. Watch cold lozenges, which carry 13-23 mg each on top of your daily dose.
Interacts with medicines Reduces absorption of quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics — separate by 4-6 hours.
